Just When I Need It The Most — Why Does My Computer Crash?

Sunday, November 8th, 2009

I’m sure that for even once in your life you have shouted in exasperation “Why does my computer crash just when I need it most?” It’s a situation most of us are familiar with — you’ve papers to complete, deadlines to beat and suddenly your computer quits just like that. Here’s a thought worth mulling over: it could be that your computer crashed simply because you used it so much. Like people, computers also crack under pressure. While it is extremely frustrating having to deal with it, it is also worth knowing why so you can keep it from happening again.

To keep this from happening to you, it’s important that you know how to establish the cause of failure. This may seem difficult to do in the face of a crashed computer. Keep in mind though that every computer figure has its signals which can help you get to the heart of the matter. Determining the cause of the crash can give you the chance to prevent it from happening.

When you are really taxing your computer, you put it through a lot of physical stress. Mostly, this is in the form of heat from the unit running non-stop for hours. Overuse, coupled with poor ventilation, can cause your computer to overheat and shut down. Fortunately, if your computer shut down as a safety precaution, it usually just needs some time to cool off before it will boot back up. However, excess heat could also cause hardware failure, which may require you to put in a new drive. If your computer is pulling more power than it can handle, it may also crash when the power supply burns out. If your computer refuses to power up at all, this is a very likely problem.

Now if you’re also wondering, “Why does my computer crash most of the time?” the problem could lie with the software or the programs installed. For instance, the crash could be because of your anti-virus software. This may sound strange as the virus is usually the one that wreaks havoc to any computer but in some cases, anti-virus software that is incompatible with your other programs, could spell trouble as well. You can address this issue by reading up on your anti-virus software. Other causes of your computer slowing down and possibly crashing later on are a fragmented hard drive or a cluttered registry. These can be remedied with a registry cleaner and a defrag program run regularly.

Once you are capable of identifying the signs of a major crash, such as a hard drive making strange noises or desktop errors indicating a software conflict, you will be much more likely to avoid losing your data. Even if it is a problem you have no control over, such as a drive just getting too old, you can at least use an online backup service before the problem progresses. Prevention is key in keeping your data safe in the event of a computer crash. And hopefully, you won’t have to ask, “Why does my computer crash” ever again!
